Beautiful Backyard Building Ideas that Only Work in Southwest Florida
By Harden Custom Homes 09 Oct 2019

The beauty of Florida living is that there is no dark stormy winter were you have to hide inside of your house waiting for a thaw to enjoy your entire property again. Southwest Florida (Punta Gorda, Port Charlotte, Fort Myers, Naples, Estero, Bonita, and Marco Island) can be enjoyed year round. That is why it is important during your homes planning phase and design process that not only the home itself be considered, but also the back yard space.

In most of the United States a back porch area is what it is referred to. Florida has a special vibe about it. We have not just a porch but a full lanai area. It may be open air or it may be enclosed with screening. It can be anything from a sitting area to a full pool, hot tub, grill, and relaxation area. It is totally up to you and the way you and your family live.

Your back yard should reflect your personal tastes and personality. Do you entertain? Or is it mostly just for personal enjoyment? These are important considerations as it is less costly to get what you want the first time in the initial build than it is to try and redo and renovate later.

This outdoor area is an extension of your home. It can add value should you decide at some point to move and resell. Our team at Harden Custom Homes can integrate many different options to make a living area that is totally your own.

We have included some of the most popular backyard ideas so you can get a jump on visualizing your ideal area.

Idea 1: Florida is hot. Living in the tropics is best enjoyed when you have your own pool and don’t have to trek to the beach if you don’t feel like it.

Idea 2: Turn the back yard into a social gathering area. By having an outdoor grill and kitchen space it becomes a social hub keeping guests outside all together rather than gathering in the kitchen.

Idea 3: Add a fire pit for chilly nights and to roast marshmallows and socialize with a nice glass of wine.

Idea 4: Love Pizza? Install a wood-burning pizza oven to make fresh pizza hand made pizza to share.

Idea 5: Use tall panels as space dividers to separate different parts of the area. It can create a dynamic effect.

Idea 6: Covered vs. uncovered areas. Why not have both? Weather permitting an open sky day or night is lovely.

Idea 7: Drapes. Adding drapes to a sitting area gives an air of elegance and privacy. Great for adult/child gatherings. You can talk and still keep an eye out.

Idea 8: Wood, metal, concrete washes, glass, rubber, mix media freely to give the area an eclectic feel.

Idea 9: Use the same furniture outside as you do indoors, to create an even flow to connect the house with the backyard.
