What Exactly is a Lanai?
By Harden Custom Homes 20 Sep 2016

When you live in southwest Florida, or anywhere in Florida and some parts of Georgia, you will hear the term “lanai” mentioned in conversation. The term lanai originated in Hawaii. It is an open-sided, roofed structure off of the back of homes. These are called porches, screened porches, verandas, and patios those who live in areas other than Florida or parts of Georgia. For Florida, the majority of the year is considered comfortable to be in the outdoors. Lanais have become an extra room on homes. Full outdoor kitchen with grills, refrigerators, and ice makers are installed. Homeowners decorate their lanai with items such as luxury seating, flat screen TV’s, ceiling fans, and fashionable area rugs. A lot of people make it a gathering place for parties. There is no worry about a rainstorm ruining your party if you are under a lanai’s covering. Also, an extension of the lanai is popular in which a swimming pool is installed, along with a screen cage. The lanais that are built on homes in this area normally have screening or glass enclosures. This is ideal if you have pets and small children to help keep them from wandering away from your home. The screening is a wonderful way to enjoy the outdoors during a nice Florida evening without having to worry about mosquitos or other pests entering the lanai. A lanai is a perfect addition to a home in the South for homeowners who enjoy the outdoors. It is a way to “bring the outdoors in”. Those who like to read or have their morning coffee outside can appreciate the luxury it is to have an enclosed lanai. You are able to reap the benefits of outdoor living without debris, bugs, and unwanted animals.
